Labor of Love An Autobiography - Anne Geddes - Book Review

labor of love autobiography anne geddes book reviewAnne Geddes has elevated baby portraits to an artistic expression of the wonder and joy of new life. Whether she is photographing a baby being held in the palm of a loving hand or dozens of babies in flower pots, you can’t miss her love for her subject matter.

My sister introduced me to Anne Geddes greeting cards and calendars many years ago. You look at her work and wonder how she does these amazing photographs.

In Labor of Love An Autobiography, Anne Geddes shares behind the scenes insights. The book is a coffee table book with beautiful photographs of babies plus her story of how she rose to national acclaim.

Talk about pressure. As her notoriety grew, mothers expected her to capture award winning photos or their babies every time she was hired. Another hazard of success is having to tell mothers that their baby didn’t make the cut to be included in a calendar, greeting card or book.

Anne Geddes has to overcome problems common to all photographers but sometimes on a grander scale. One time she had to reassemble 40+ six month old babies for a session when she had problems with her film.

Anne Geddes’ images inspire emotional connections with babies.  Labor of Love An Autobiography is a coffee table book that will start conversations with friends about adorable babies. It is one of my favorite photography books.
